Located within St. Mary’s Church, Cottonstones Community Centre was established in 1986 to promote the wellbeing of residents in Cottonstones, Mill Bank and the surrounding hillside areas.

The aims of the centre are at the very heart of our constitution:

“to bring together residents of all ages to support their health and education; to provide facilities for physical, mental, recreational, social and intellectual activities; and to foster a community spirit for these and other charitable purposes”.

A group of Cottonstones, Mill Bank and hillside residents got together in the Spring of 2025 in light of the news that a consultation on the future of St. Mary’s Church and the Community Centre was to be carried out.

Since that first meeting the group have been working together to give both the Church and Centre the very best chance of survival.

From our very first Community Centre fundraising event in May – a quiz social night; via a pop-up café, Bingo, Rushbearing, and more quizzes, we’ve worked hard to put Centre finances on a firmer footing. Volunteers have cleaned, cleared and freshened up the hallway, lounge and outdoor spaces.

In September the Report on the consultation was published, including recommendations on the next steps for the Community Centre. A group of residents agreed that it was now time to formalise their commitment and on 2nd October 2025 the Committee formed and held its first meeting.
